Gas is typically portrayed as an absolutely necessary expense - like the cost of food or shelter. I know better... as do probably 80% of the world's inhabitants. Being "over that oil barrel" is a voluntary choice. (Granted, our society shapes that choice. But many citizens have chosen to live far from their destinations.)

I have absolutely no sympathy for those who have chosen to live far from their place of employment, and then complain about gas prices.
When we moved to Boise in 2002 our initial house hunting consisted of finding where my employer was located and then driving around that 1 square mile block, where we ended up locating an apartment for rent. About two years later we purchased a house adjacent to the school which my children attended, and where my wife is currently employed. We now live about 2 miles from my office.
Some of my current co-workers who moved here about the same time as I did chose to live anywhere from 5 to 20 miles away. What were they thinking?
Thank you Bob T., I preach this same fact to my acquaintances. My wife and I settled for a smaller house in our budget just to live withing 4 miles of everything we need.
